The above raise interesting questions. I would say though, if the MMO in question were both challenging enough as to disuade players from soloing but rewarded well for all their efforts alot of the above would be set aside. EQ made it really pretty difficult to solo, it could be done but it was very painful to do so, especially when the death penalty could be devestating at times. The down side though, was the rewards against mobs were pretty negligable. Fix that issue and make the general quests tough but seriously rewarding, you will cut down alot of the soloing sets.

There are times a run at soloing is relaxing, especially to the casual gamer, if the MMO can make it easy to quick group it can be done successfully.
Just some thoughts.

When I read this it made me think of the Total War series. In Empire: Total War the best option for defeating your enemies on the open field, not in sieges, is to force a rout. Shelling them with cannon balls, while not killing a large amount of their forces, severely devastates the morale and things like pincer attacks and attacking flanks do the most damage to morale, causing the enemy to take more damage due to the confusion. The use of morale is a great tool, really like how they use it in Dawn of War too.
